Volcano Cross-Over  West to East Trek

The trek takes you over from Port Vato across the volcanic ash plane, to spend a night on top, visit both volcanoes, followed by a night at Endu Village to experience local village life. One the highlights of this trek is staying a night at East Camp where you will witness the volcanoes glow in the night sky. You can do this trip in either 3 or 4 days allowing an extra night on the ash plane.

Fitness Rating: Strenuous​

Day 1
Approximately 5 hrs up to West Camp (720 meters). Approximately 3 hours to Mt Benbow (1020 meters) returning to West Camp. 
Day 2
Approximately 2 hours to Mt Marum Volcano (950 meters). Then 45 minutes to reach East Camp.
Day 3
​Approximately 5 hours down to Endu Village

Description:

1.After 50 minute drive from your accommodation in Craig Cove your trek starts at Port Vato with an easy walk on a truck track through local gardens, coconut trees, and forest. You will then walk through a large, dried-up river bed with hard black sand (flat but without shade) to finally you will stand in front of a big cliff After lunch there is a further steep climb through the river bed - at this point you are approximately at the middle of your trek! A hilly climb up a single track under the forest follows. You will  walk for  up a very narrow wet river bed, with exceptional scenery before a short very steep sandy dune until you reach the ash plane and West Camp Site. It’s here you glimpse the expanse of the ash plane and volcano scenery for the first time. Time dependent you will then walk across the open ash plain, where only sparse moss-like vegetation grows.  Pass scoria left from lava flow from a previous eruption. Climb a steep ridge to the edge of the main crater of Mt Benbow. The ridge is narrow in places and not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo. The return trip follows the same route back to the camp. You will set up camp while your local guide prepares dinner.

2.Begin with an easy walk across the ash plain through a desert-like landscape with sparse green mosses and grasses near the edge of the plain.  In fine weather, you will see spectacular views of both Mt Benbow and Mt Marum with their plumes of smoke.  Walk past a 'rivers of scoria' – lava flows from previous eruptions. Walk around a newly created volcanic landscape of fresh lava flow and a hot water lake before arriving at East Camp for the night. Enjoy the spectacular crimson glow of Mt Marum at night as you relax with your evening meal.

3.You start your journey with an undulating walk across mountainous terrain until you reach an old ash plane spotted with bushes and grass. Before you enter the fern forest ahead of you look behind you; the view to Marum is stunning! After following a bush trail it is time to say “bye-bye" to Marum! Time for your last volcano photo - framed by tree branches! From here there is a 2 hour downward descent. The last half an hour is the steepest. As a reward, you will finally arrive at a beautiful beach where you can safety swim and enjoy offerings of local organic fruit to replenish you. After walking on a soft sandy beach, you follow a flat truck track through forest alongside the coast until you reach Endu Village.
