Description:
North Ambrym From Ranon beach, either walk for about 50 minutes (or catch a 20 minute truck transfer) through the stunning tropical forest high into the hills to Fanla Village where its people will perform the spectacular Rom Dances - traditionally performed only on special occasions. This masked dance is associated with magic and is believed to influence their annual harvest. Watch a full schedule of hypnotic dances, listen to haunting bamboo flute music, then witness a small display of mysterious ‘Black Magic’ only performed by ‘the man blong blak majik’. Each tall conical mask is made from brightly painted banana-fibre and is made in complete secrecy by specific mask makers. The performers thick cloak of banana leaves are destroyed after each performance to avoid the spirits haunting the performer. This part of Ambrym is also known for its fine carving in wood and volcanic stones. Take the opportunity to buy carvings directly from local artisans. |
